Loss of fur for a dog in some areas of the body is sometimes an indication of a condition known as dog hot spots. Sometimes moisture is noticeable in the area but this is not necessarily so. The condition is very uncomfortable for the animal.

Hot spots are a sign of bacterial infection on the skin. It is linked to the environment as the bacteria will only thrive in conditions favorable to them. Poor grooming, allergies or behavioral issues can all play a role in the development of these hot spots.

Sometimes the pet may show allergic reaction to food or parasites. The animal licks an area of its body excessively creating a damp warm spot. These are the kind of conditions ideal for the bacteria. The skin starts to itch and the dog scratches a lot. It loses fur as a result. Loss of fur can sometimes be attributed to other factors as well such as anxiety or boredom.

Clipping of the hair around the problem area and applying a mild antiseptic sometimes take care of the infection, but if it does not, it is best to call in the advice of a vet as other factors may also be at play. If your dog licks the area during treatment, an e-collar must be used. This will help keep the area dry which is essential.

The problem is a little more complicated than just one simple treatment though. Sometimes a cure requires seeing the bigger picture. This involves finding the underlying problem. As long as that persists so will the infection. It is not always easy to find out the deeper problem, but it is necessary to put and end to the problem once and for all.

Make a habit of grooming your dog regularly. If it is not possible take the animal to the groomer. Poor grooming may be a contributing cause especially in dogs with longer and thicker fur. Having the fur clipped regularly in warm weather is also a good idea. Time you spend on grooming the dog also means you are giving the dog more attention and this can help relieve boredom and anxiety. Shorter fur will it make easier to spot hot spots when they occur as well as treating them. Giving the dog a bath regularly will kill any parasites there may be.

Getting the better of an allergy can be difficult. First the cause has to be found. You must determine whether it is a parasite or allergy. Then you must determine where the problem comes from. In the case of parasites like fleas a bath with the right shampoo should be effective. If not medication might help. If not you are dealing with an allergy and that can be complicated to find out what causes it. Change the food to see if that takes away the problem. If not there must be something in the home of yard causing it. Finding it may prove to be very difficult and sometimes the only way is blocking off a certain area to see if that helps. If not, you move on the next.

To keep your canine friend in the best possible heath, be on the lookout for dog hot spots. Start treatment as soon as you notice them. Make sure the dog gets a lot of attention and that it has some toys to play with to fight boredom. If you take away the underlying cause, the problem will be solved without expensive treatment.
